During the last storm with 70 mph winds my jib came unfurled. We were in North Carolina putting and offer in on a home, away from the boat and just found out tonight. I haven't seen it yet, but was told its pretty bad. Now on top of moving expenses, down payments, inspections, we have this bill. Insurance deductible is $1000. A new sail is $1200. AHHHHHHHHHHHHG!

Marc:

Could it be time to look for other insurance coverage?

PS: That sucks.

Looks like you've just saved $200.00 on your new foresail. :cussing: Sorry.

I see lots of boats with roller furling that only secure the sail with one or two wraps of line on the dock. Not saying you did anything wrong, 70 mph winds are going to break things. I wrap mine with all the line and rerun it aft each time I sail.

My wife is sick over this. She furled it and thinks she did something wrong. There is no way I will blame this on her. Ultimately, I'm captain, and it's my responsibility to check over the boat when we come in. I'm not sure I would claim this even if the deductible was $500. It would just make my insurance go up. It would have been nice if the marina would have called us when it happened instead of a friend at work telling her.

Where would you buy a sail from. I've check here, Rolly, and Bacon. I got my last new sail from Bacon and it took forever.

Hey Marc...

You weren't the only one to suffer a ripped headsail from it coming unfurled in that storm. My furling line vibrated against the drum housing in what was recorded as up to 90 mph gusts, parted, and allowed the sail to partially unfurl. Am waiting for a quote from North Sails now on a 110 replacement. See pix below...

This storm's intensity was way beyond predictions. Multiple sheet wraps did not prevent this damage. Boat broke a bow line and suffered some hull damage from getting against my neighbor's boat and the dock as well.

Mine was the original 13yr old sail. It was in fairly good shape. I just had the sunbrella restitched.
