I just purchased a 78 oday 23. Seems like a pretty solid vessel and fun to sail. we just had the first rain since I purchased the vessel and there was a small pool of water in the v-berth (no cushions). the water seemed to be concentrated at the point where the forward bulkhead joined with the vberth platform. Has anyone had this problem? Any ideas where I should look on the deck?

Leekey 23

I had a simlar problem with my O'day Tempest. There was water pooling in the 1/4 berths and on the floor next to the porta potty. I tell you what I found and how I fixed it. The leek on the floor was from the spreader light connection on the deck. Thats on leek sealed, now for the tricky one. The water in the 1/4 berths had me puzzled for some time, then I decide to try a repair.(after all the boat wasn't going to fix it'self) I pulled off the outer flexable rubrail to expose the ridged rail underneth. I used Marine GOOP to seal the gap between the ridged rail and the deck. I figured out that the water was getting in between the deck and hull and running down into the 1/4 berths. After the ridged rail was sealed I haven't had any more problems. The one drawback you'll find is that the flexable rubrail will shrink once it is pulled off. I wasn't able to reuse mine and had to buy another. I know this was long, but I wanted to make sure it was clear how the water was getting in. I hope this helps you. The only other piece of advice I have for you is try to really investagate throughly and pin down the point of entry. Best of Luck, Jason Mick

Use a hose

I would suggest using a hose to identify where the problem is. Soak individual areas of the boat one at a time with a hose while checking to see if the pool appears inside. If you have one, I would check the deck anchor locker. ON my 79 Oday 23, the locker is just above the bulkhead you mention. I would also check the stemhead fittings. You are at least somewhat fortunate in the location of the leak in that the water seems to be pooling at a high point in the boat. This would indicate that the leak is nearby.

Leaky Boat

I also have a 79 O'Day 23. My v-berth wall and cushions were getting wet due to deck leaks around the pulpit flanges. You could have a leak around any of the deck mounted hardware up in that area. Another option is the hose that drains the anchor locker, perhaps it is leaking.
