Hi all, I'm looking at an O'day 25 which has what appears to me to be a lot of water in the cabin bilge. How much is normal, and is this caused by something related to the centerboard mechanism such as a pennant thru-hull, or sometuing else ? Thanks in advance !

I own a 1978 25' O'Day. The bilge is dry 100% of the time. I had some trouble at the beginning of the season with a leak around the throttle control (mine is a saildrive model). This would only leak when there was a hard rain. Other then that the bilge is dry. I would also look around the bedding for the deck stantions. If you dry out the bilge how fast does the water gather? If you can not tell the general area the water is coming from mark around the top part of the bilge with white chalk to get an idea where the water is flowing from.

Check The Chainplates

Wet Bilge
I had a wet Bilge and foung out the previous owner used the ice box and never drained it out. Cleaned out all the water and never leaked unless I was using the icebox. It took me a month to figure this out. Hope this helps.

The cockpit drain, located at the rear of the cockpit floorpan, has a connection to the transom through hull, about 6" actually. Mine was a piece of clamped on rad hose. It had split and was allowing the rain collected on the floor to dump into the bilge. You might want to crawl back and check that out. An amazing amount of water would collect from rain event to rain event. Don

Cockpit Drain as well
On my 22, the same thing happened. The plastic cockpit drain snapped and was dumping the water into the bilge. I couldn't figure out where it was coming from for the longest time. Now, the bilge is always dry... Josh

Wet Bilge
I had a catalina 25 and the bilge would only leak when I was sailing. It turned out to be the gudgeon screws for the lower gudgeon would be under water under sail but not at rest. I rebedded the screws and no more water in the bilge. dave

My 25 had several leaks. Cockpit drain was one that was already described. I also found the knot meter seaping. I checked the topside by having my wife hold a garden hose on each hardware mounting while I inspected below with a flashlight. While in the water, the flashlight and a very close look will show leaks. Sometimes, after all that, you still can't find them.

Thru hull
I have yet to sail my boat but I have removed all the hardware and wood including the thru hulls. The cockpit thru hull at the transom looked good but upon a close examination, there was a crack in it that went all the way to the inside. I am considering a bronze replacement instead of the nylon. Is the boat wet when you get aboard or is it wet after you sail? r.w.landau
