So, anybody out there know who makes a Westerbeke? Specifically the 30B Three? If I decide not to rob the Handy-Pantry down the road for the purchase of the new Beta I've been lusting over, I might snatch this ol' fuel burner out and overhaul it this winter. And MAN, Torresson Marine is killing me on these parts. And I know Westerbeke does not cast an engine. But I can't seem to find out who builds it, especially with my limited internet skills. Well that, and that little brain damage thing what with drinking that paint thinner and all...

It is a Mitsubishi. I was just given a 30B Three and plan to re-build it when time permits. I will know in a few weeks exactly what Mitsubishi block it is. The one I was given cracked the head when someone was trying to remove the manifold. I suspect it is an L3 series from Mitsubishi but I do not yet have it in my shop...

Hey Maine. I had started to suspect Mitsubishi had a huge hand in this, as the alternator, and starter are Mitsu. But I got stumped on the specifics of this thing, like is was originally made for some kind of obscure auto, or an odd tractor, but that's about as far as I got with it. I swear there CAN NOT be anything any more simple than this little 50 amp alternator, but when I go to NAPA or whatever for replacement parts for it, you would think that I walked in there with a dead cat in a box. Same on the starter, which I subsequently went through both myself.
Now, I can pick up these Johnson 810 impellers about anywhere, they're hitting me about 20 bucks, no biggee. But two hundred bucks for that little three hole head gasket? I carried it in the boat like the Queens jewelry.
And the people at Westerbeke are downright rude, at best dismissive.
That's one reason I had considered deep sixing the infernal contraption, if nothing else, in utter defiance of the trifling thing..

Chris,

I use Hansen Marine in MA the NE Westerbeke distributor. They are good folks but yes if you buy from Westy you'll PAY.... Once I know the engine and order a Mitsubishi parts manual, about $35.00, I will give you the manual part#...

I will PM you the info as Westy has a contract with Mitsu that Mitsu won't sell parts for a Westy. I will share with you how to get around this, but not publicly.
