I've been sailing a 25ft sailboat with a outboard on Lake Erie for 5-6 years. I'm now looking at moving up to a 28-30 ft diesel powered sailboat. In the Great Lake area Yanmar and Universal diesels seem the most common. I've come across a boat that I'm very interested in, but it has a Westerbeke diesel. I'm not familiar with this brand, nor do I have any insite into the reputation of this company or the product. Anyone have experience with this engine?

Great engine

I had one in a 1984 Hunter 27. I never had a problem and it was pretty easy to find routine maintenance parts. Mine was a 10 HP 2-cylinder.

The Westebeke 10-2

is a good engine. My previous boat, an '86 Oday 272 was powered by a 10-2 and it ran beautifully. Parts were never a problem. I really didn't need much besides filters and belts.

Many Sabres

Many of the Sabres have Westebekes in them. Very reliable. My friend has one in his Nonsuch 30 and loves it also.

crazy cracker

great engine

I recently sold a 33' boat with a Westerbeke. The engine was very solid, well built and designed. I would strongly recommend a Westerbeke any day. They are more commen than you realize, Beneteau uses them, or did in the 2000 models, for their 411's. And yes, Universal and Westerbeke are made by the same critters. Parts can be a tad more expensive but just like everything, you can always find off name parts.

the 13.5 hp is a nice little engine

My 1987 Cal 28-2 has the smallest diesel Westerbeke tnen offered, the 13.5 hp. My boat was stored away for a year when I bought it (about 850 hours on it) and cranked just fine when it came off the hard this season and has run like a charm since. It doesn't make an unholy racket nor any fumes down below. I've been in a newish Catalina 28 recently with a noisy vibraion-prone 25hp diesel, so I'm appreciating the serenity of the Westerbeke. The power feels just right for the size/weight of the boat, always a consideration.

I Had the Same Question ....

and was told that having a Westerbeke was not a bad thing and no reason to not buy the boat. Westerbeke uses engine blocks from many companies like Perkins , Kubota and Mitsibushi. My Mitsibushi was an exceptional motor that had a self bleeding fuel system and out performed similiar Yanmar diesels. A few years ago Westerbeke purchased Universal Diesel. Parts are expensive but not as bad as Volvo.nDon't hesitate because of this brand name motor
