Westerbeke alarm sounding (faintly)...

Dear all: I posted this question a few days ago on the Marine Diesel Direct board, a terrific site, but they are not always too quick to respond. I wondered if anyone here has any thoughts about this. Thanks very much in advance for your input! This past weekend we were out on our boat (1986 O'Day 272) for the first extended trip of the year. This is my fourth season with the boat, and have had no serious engine problems to date. Engine has about 700 hours on it. Saturday, after four hours of continuous motoring (no wind, 90+ degrees), as we slowed to enter an anchorage (going from 2700 rpm +/- to perhaps 1200), I noticed the oil pressure alarm sounding weakly. At first I was not even sure what it was. Throughout, the guages indicated about 40-45 lbs pressure, which has always been the case, and about 185 degrees of engine temp. Felt cooling water coming out of transom exhaust and it was not hot. When I'd rev the engine higher I could get the alarm to cease. When we anchored I checked oil and it was about 1/2 quart low. I added that much the next morning. Throughout the day of again motoring for a few hours, the alarm was still there, but still soft. I seemed to notice that on the return trip, in 2 foot swells, the alarm would sometimes sound when we were dropping down from a swell, and cease or dimish on the "uphill" ride. The oil I've been using is 15W-40. Is my oil pressure in the OK range? Does this sound like a bad sender? Could it be a ground connection to the sender?

No,

vibration is sounding the alarm. Nothing to worry about!

Jim, please elaborate

do you mean vibration of the electrical connection? Certainly something I'd like to fix so I'll know when I've really got a problem.

similar problem on a Yanmar 2GM20F

Lou: I had a similar problem on my Yanmar 2gm20f. It turned out that the temp sensor had parted and it was shorting out. Check all of your sensors and be sure that they are not broken or just loose.

Sounds like sensor troubles

Lou, Sailing season greetings!!! I had a similar problem with a faulty temp alarm sensor. Either of the alarm sensors, pressure or temp, could be the culprit. Just for the record there are two sensors each for temp and oil pressure, one set for the gauges and the other for the alarm circuit. When the problem happens you need to disconnect in turn each of the alarm sensors to figure which one is causing the problem. Happy hunting, Brian, "Hosanna" '88 272LE.

Lou, the alarm sounding is a function of RPM?

right? Try holding the alarm tight when is starts sounding. See if it stops. Change the RPMs when its is sounding, see if it stops. Let us know!

Similar problem on an 83.

Turned out to be an intermitent electrical short on the wiring harness. The harness had been routed against a sharp fiberglass edge which whith time had chaffed the insulation of a couple of wires. I was getting a faint temperature light and buzzer. Sensors and readings were tested to no avail. The mistery was discovered a few months latter when the hot (+) wire was severed altogether and upon the repair of the chaffed wires the problem dissapeared.

Same thing happened on a friend's 86 272...

with a Westerbeke, it was just his oil pressure sensor. It was an inexpensive part direct from Westerbeke. Manny

Thanks for all the suggestions

I'll try to track down the problem today, starting with looking for a loose or cracked lead/connection. Sounds like worst comes to worst it is a sensor, which, as Brian and Manny suggest, will just need to be tracked down to determine which one, and changed out. I'll try to get into it today and let you know. Thanks all!

Oil

What size Westerbeke do you have? I have a 21. My oil pressure usually reads around 75. Also I use straight 30 weight oil. I believe that's what is called for in the manual. It sounds like your oil pressure sensor might need to be replaced. Not a big deal, easy to do.

Jim, yes, it stops when I hold it or push on it.

I found no loose or broken connections at the engine/sender unit. What does it mean if it stops when I touch the alarm unit? Axel, the engine is a 10Two (10HP), I believe Westerbeke's smallest diesel.
