Forgive me for asking some 'dumb questions', but on my 'new to me' O'Day 272, I have a Westerbeke 10-2 diesel. My question is concerning the guage panel - Water temp when under power is around 150, Charge meter is around 12 v, Oil pressure is high, but Tach never gets very far from being 'pegged' at lower end. 500 RPM is first major indicator if I'm reading it right, with 4000 as highest. Most of time it is around 200 RPM, & I know that can't be right. Could I have a loose connection on the motor? Obviously not creating a problem except in my mind as to why I'm not showing higher RPM

Most tach's get their signal from the AC terminals on the alternator and you might not have a good connection or the PO changed the alternator and the new one didn't have the terminals for a tach......do you have the manual for the engine? that will have a diagram showing the wire colors from the tach to the alternator

Thanks guys. PO rebuilt engine, and think he painted EVERYTHING RED...

Will check wiring next time I go to boat. Maybe pull instrument cluster too to see if anything has slipped off. It is making some contact - doesn't stay pegged, so suspect loose wiring, or maybe wiring clip is having trouble with painted stud...

You can scratch off the paint with your finger nail on the wire to see its color
