All New England 'rope' 40% off this Friday. I'm looking at their Sta-set polyester yacht braid. I need about 55' of 7/16" for my Hood continuous furler.

That's good for the intended use. I have had that on my single line furler for over 15 years.

Good to know. Thanks Stu. Mine line is pretty old and stiff. I just don't like having to do the butt splice again.

Mine for my furler needs replacing too, but it looks like the but splice needs to be done once it is installed on the boat. I have never done a splice myself, and would need to buy the corect fid, and then practice a bunch before even attempting this. Are there any tricks to doing this, or do I need to get a rigger out to the boat?

Yeah, I ustepped my mast last Fall so I had to cut the splice again. There are simple ways to do this and have a strong connection. I'll look for the method I used.

That's not how I did it but I like it more. I need to find one of those long 'needles' he fed thru and one of those fids.

That's how I did the line for my top-down furler and it worked great after about 10 tries. :)

Just get some stiff wire and bend it in half and put a few twists in it to further stiffen it and you have the "needle". On large diameter line I use a coat hanger to make the needle and it works great.

Not exactly the same as the one in the video, but does the same job very well; D-Splicer Fid (check Amazon)
Also, JMO, the best set of fids are called Selma Fids (they nest together for easy stowage), about $60 a set, also look on Amazon.

I found the Marlow splicing needle on Amazon. I'm one of those; if anything can go wrong it will happen to me guys so I'm not going to try and make one. I have the needle and thread for the lock stitches. My marlin spike should suffice as a fid to open up the weave. Thanks for the posts! It was helpful.

What size line does your furler take? My line is so old, it is difficult to tell.

Looks like the PO used StaysetX for this line. Would regular Stayset be OK?

Picture of my furler. The green rat is just a bonus.

Mine is 7/16". I don't see why StaSetX wouldn't work. I am no expert. Their chart might help
