We started using West Marine Nitrator in our holding tank and it seems to have eliminated all the bad odors coming from the vent when we pump the toilet. Supposedly it supplies oxygen to the bacteria. Alas, West Marine has discontinued this product. I wonder if there is a problem with it that I do not know about.

Also would plain nitrogen liquid fertilizer have the same oxygenating effect? Is there another better source of nitrogen holding tank treatment?

Cheers,

Odorlos is the original nitrates tank product

Apparently you've been using a WM knockoff of it--which, knowing how WM operates these days, you've prob'ly been paying a lot more for an inferior imitation than the real thing...which you can check out here: ODØRLØS Holding Tank Treatment The active ingredient is nitrates, which promote oxygen release from the waste itself, helping to create the aerobic environment needed to prevent odors. Nitrates aren't quite the same thing as nitrogen fertilizer and quite a bit of research has gone into Odorlos formulation, dosage etc. I don't know what if any risks there'd be in using liquid nitrogen fertilizer--or even whether it would work...so I think it best to stick with a known product for tank use.

Btw, Odorlos is one of only two tank products I recommend...Raritan K.O. is the other one.

Thanks, Peggy

This is very helpful. I think we will forget the fertilizer go with what you recommend.
