Just received the renewal for my West Marine (St Paul) insurance policy and was SHOCKED! The premium was up from $449 last year to $1188 - a 165% increase! The boat is a 32' Pearson valued at $37,000. No claims in 3 years. When I called West Marine I was informed that these are the new rates for Florida boat owners and that I should have a nice day. Any recommendations for Florida insurance?

Boats US

Just switched over from Allstate to Boats US. We were paying $320 in California and it went down to $248. I think that the Boats US policy is a little bit better coverage too. We got a quote from WM and it was higher than the Allstate price. This policy is for $35k agreed value......

Recommend Boat/US

I have nothing but good things to say about Boat/US insurance. My agreed hull value is 90,000 and My sailing area that I am insured for includes all of coastal North Carolina, nearby offshore, rivers, bays, sounds, ICW and all of Chesapeake Bay. My premium renews in July. My premium last year was $622. I had a claim in 1993 and a big one for Hurricane Floyd in 1999. The help and support I got from Boat/US folks was outstanding. Some of my friends had a higher premium and it was attributed to less years of experience. Wayne, s/v Wind Driift

insurance

I pay 10% less than that for my H410. Try Defender at their Insurance program 888-611-0900 X 121 Mary Waddleton. Had a claim last year. Was handled promptly and no increase in premium for this year. Bryce S/V Spellbinder H410

WM -Texas

My insurance thru West Marine went up about $130 from last year - I thought that was outrageous! (about $500 to about $630) No claims, agreed value of $50k, 15 years experience. They told me it was a general increase and that it would probably hold steady for the next 2-3 years - we'll see! I called BoatUS and several others and all were $100 to $500 more although BoatUS came the closest and did have some better towing, etc., it was things I *hope* I dont need and wasnt willing to pay another $100+ for. State Farm

I've got mine through State Farm. Great coverage area, includes the northern Bahamas and US East and Gulf Coasts. Costs about $200 less that West Marine without the Bahamas. The agency I work with is staffed and run by boaters. Insurance is for a Hunter 37.5 and dinghy. Jim "Prospect"

just made the switch

We had West Marine Ins. and recently had a small claim. Actually, we wouldn't have had a claim at all if they had come to the boat in a timely fashion and assessed the damage instead of waiting a full week, anyway. We just switched from WM to Boat US, we now pay slightly more but feel our coverage is better. WM ins. makes us carry a rider when we sail farther than 15 miles off shore, hard not to sail more than 15 miles off shore in south florida with the Keys, Tortugas, Bahamas, Cuba at our doorstep. I see a lot of people got large increased from West Ins., if we had stayed with them our increase would have been minimal, seems to me that the rates are very depentant, I just wonder on what.. Sounds like some nice boats are being jacked up in rates. I dont know about the rest of America but here in Florida we are pretty used to being screwed by insurance companies after Andrew.
