The older ones used to be made by Uniden, since they were identical. Don't know these days. We had one maybe ten years ago that worked fine, although like the Uniden that preceded it didn't have that great a speaker. We ended up with a Standard Horizon that has been working fine for over four years. My experience is that they are worth it for a good sale, but will need to be replaced within five years. Just my take. Your boat, your choice.

Looks identical to the Uniden MHS-126 and has the same features.. Uniden MSRP is $139.99

Stu, notice that the Standard Horizon HX 280 can be had on ebay for $115. Specs list it as 5W. I am not sure what the significance of the difference between a 6W and 5W unit is. Is useful/important to have the NOAA weather alerts feature or can that be programmed in?

Difference between 6W and 5W would probably not be noticed by most HH users. My take is if you're sailing on something a big as the Chesapeake you're gonna want a masthead antenna, but for around here, where the Main SF Bay is only 3 miles across, it works just fine all the time. Hailing bridges, regardless of where, means you're close anyway. Your boat, your choice.

We have a three or four year old SH HX270 and it already had the weather alerts - IF you so program the units, so I'm guessing all the new HHs have that feature. There's also your eyeballs. :)
