In the continous improvement department of our 1986 S2- I reinstalled the freshly painted pedestal after sealing holes with epoxy. This boat has the Edson pull pull system. I had trouble getting the bracket holding the steering cables to line up with the bolts under the pedestal. I broke one of the white plastic cable end fittings! http://www.edsonmarine.com/marinestore/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1114
Not bad $ but I must disconnect the cable at the quadrant, pull it through the conduit and reinsert it. The end is probably a little frayed so it will be a challenge if not impossible to push it back through. I called Edson and they recommend replacing the cables and conduit at around $750. I see their point but I'm going to pull the cable and see what it looks like. Then I'll try to get it back in the conduit. One thing always leads to another..

Edson recommends replacement of cables about every ten years. I doubt that most owners do so. If you do replace a cable, be careful as they do strech just enough to cause you some trouble if you arent keeping an eye on them. I recall someone on here who had trouble after changing cables who ended up with a long afternoon on the emergency tiller.

Dont keep us in suspense...from the sounds of things the holes werent potted with epoxy by the factor. What did the factory do? Just use a bunch of silicone? Was the core wet at all?

Thanks,

Bob

Also, how did the painting project go? What did you use? How did it come out? Any tips?

The holes were not epoxied at the factory. I noticed this summer with the cover off the compass in the rain, I had a little water leaking down the inside of the pedestal and wetting the edge of the core. It always dried out though. After the pedestal bolts were removed the pedestal still wouldn't move. It was held with tons of black silicone. The only way to free it was to get a putty knife under it and work it around a bit. Then I was able to free it. The core was dry! I routed out the core around the edges of the bolt holes and the main large hole then epoxied. The epoxy bubbled a bit and after I redrilled the holes there was a void or two. However it was put in pretty runny and it should have sealed the core. Time was getting late and I was not about to do it all over again. I reinstalled the pedestal and the guard's feet with half a tube of GE black silicone II then proceeded to break said plastic cable end fitting. The paint job is okay. I did have to sandblast a few small spots of stainless to alum corrosion. Pedestal was black anodized so it's gloss black now. I used Dupont alum wash and alum acid prep, then dupont spray can primer followed by Imron. I have a few fish eyes in the paint but I called it good enough! It shines like crazy now.
