Rudder Bearing

On a '97 H40.5 there are times when I inspect the lower bearing either while the boat is on the hard or in the water. Over the years every time I check, I find white sealant coming out between the bearing and the rudder post in very thin strips. I assume this is not a problem since the rudder functions perfectly and there is no play. Just wondering what is the source of the sealant. Also I would like to have ALL the info I could get on this rudder installation, such as removal and installation instructions, drawings and pictures including those of the rudder, bearings and other components. Where should I look for this info? Thanks

Welcome Al, and thanks for your time and expertise. Now my question. I have a 1988 Hunter 33.5 with original rudder that I'm assuming is a Foss Foam rudder. When the boat gets hauled out in the fall, I notice drops of rust-colored water underneath the rudder for some time after haul-out. Is this a problem? the rudder seems to be working fine and has no bubbling or delaminating from overheating. I have been told that I should drill a couple of drain holes in the fall and then expoxy them over in the spring to prevent freeze damage. Is this a good idea or not? Thanks.
