Thanks to ClownPilot's advice I rebuilt my keel winch ( the handle would spin wildly on launch unless lashed down ). When I winch up the keel, as it reaches about half way it drops a few inches and is violently arrested by the cable. I can then continue to winch up the keel fully. I don't think the cable is slipping on the winch drum but can't tell for sure unless i cut out a hole to allow me to see the drum. Any help would be greatfully received. Peter.

cable wrap

Mine does the same occasionally. With mine, the cable will sometimes pile up on itself and then roll off into a lower point, making a jarring thump sound. If you have a garden hose reel you will note when you crank the hose in that it will sometimes pile on itself on one end of the reel or the other. A winch will do the same thing unless you guide the cable. I have one on my Jeep as well and it will pile cable on one end if you let it. With the Mac, you can't really do much to guide it onto the drum. Luckily, the drum is big enough to handle the cable even if it all goes to one side. You will experience the jarring, dropping sensation on occasion. Not much you can do about it. Remember, the keel weighs 625 lbs or so, a little movement with a quick stop will make it seem like it moves several inches. It is just one of those things. -John

Thanks

Thanks for the info John. I will rewind the cable in layers and hope that helps. Peter.
