When I was asked for a quote to redo wiring on another cruiser's boat, my estimate was too high. Answering the question as to why, I said the good heat shrink was expensive, as was tinned cabling and wire, etc. I just wasn't comfortable with the job, at any price I told him so, nicely of course.
If the job makes you uncomfortable, pass on it. Your mind has good instincts.

I like to use the phrase "I respectfully decline" followed by a brief, but possibly vague explanation of why.

I myself have had some experience with leather on a boat. I worked at the world's largest Cobalt boat dealer in the early 2000s. For those who don't know, buying a Cobalt is like buying a Bentley. It's not a Chevrolet...

We had a Cobalt 360, which at the time was their top of the line model. It had leather seating in the cockpit. It weathered very poorly and showed a lot of wear. That being said, once the new was gone it held up quite well to sun and water. Would I recommend it? Never.... was it kinda cool? Definitely.
