I own a 1974 22 ft Oday with a fixed keel (shoal draft) and I have never had it weighed. I am looking at a 1980 23 ft Oday that has the molded keel with swing fin. If anyone knows the weights of either boat please share. I am trying to determine if my current trailer will hold the bigger boat's weight and if my truck will handle the extra weight when towing it.

O'Day 23 weight
Joe, I'm giving you a link to the Unofficial O'Day Owner's site. They have a 1979 O'Day 23 posted on the site with a displacement of 3,085 Lbs. The keel weighs 1200. According to what Rudy Nickerson of D&R Marine told me about the 23s, any 23s that O'Day built after 1974 were great boats. The older 23s had cast iron keels which were a problem. I bought a new Long trailer with 4500 lbs cap.- for my 86 O'Day 222 which has 2200 lbs, and I'm pulling this rig with a 2001 GMC pick-up with a cap, two wheel drive, and 4.8 liter V-8 engine. My Long mfg flat bunk tandem wheel trailer can take a 23 foot boat, and I'm confident that this rig could handle an O'Day 23 with no problem. If this boat is in good condition, I'd snap it up because they are great boats. Good luck.

'80 23 Weight
I have a ’80 O’day 23 on a tandem axle EzLoader trailer. I have weighed the boat and trailer at 4,100 lbs. with all the gear onboard but no outboard (normal towing configuration.) It has a tongue weight of around 500 lbs. I pull it with a GMC 1500 4x4 with a 5.7 L and AT. I have had no problems with this setup. I would be hesitant to trailer this boat on just a single axle. The stability and safety of a tandem axle is worth the investment if you need to upgrade. I agree with Joe, it’s probably one of the best trailer sailors around. Shine On! Don

Great info on towing the Oday 23 from Joe and Don. I have a '79 23 and she is a great boat. For comparison purposes: According to the late '70's sales materials for the Oday 22, it had a minimum towing weight of 2183 lbs. This was the stub keel/swing centerboard model, so it was different than your earlier plain stub keel. However, the information is still useful to show that the 23 is probably about 33% heavier than your 22. Some people have said on this website that the 23 is a real load to tow, and that they only do so twice a year: to the marina in the spring and home in the fall.
