I need a new outboard motor and have narrowed it down to a 8HP, 4 stroke Honda or Yamaha. Now this is the concern. The Yamaha weights in at 83 pounds while the Honda weights in at 92 pounds...a 9 pound difference. The bracket is mounted on the port side of the transom. Will the extra weight of the Honda (or even the Yamaha) result in a noticable tilt? As you can infer, I prefer the Honda, but these are both top shelf engines. I am hoping some of you have gone down this road before.

Oh boy, few things get this forum going like a discussion about outboards. For my part I have the 8hp Honda. The thing is reliable, starts on the first pull, has ample power and can recharge the boat battery. My C22 sits perfectly level in the water. When you think about it the weight of the crew and where they sit will have just as much impact on the trim of the boat. Eat a little less and get the Honda.

outboard weight concerns
The Honda 8 is heavy...and the mount may not handle it... If your considering a long shaft without starter, I'd go for the Honda 8 Classic rather than the 2001 or later Honda 8 which is actually a detuned 9.9. The Classic 8 is a great motor and was reintroduced because of popular demand. They are not listed on the web site, and your dealer may even be unaware that they are available... but they are. I had a Honda 8 classic on a C22 and at 79 lbs, the mount handled it ok. I wouldn't go much heavier than that though. The Classic is much lighter being a true 8 hp and will get better fuel economy. And, it has a real choke on it...something I think is far better for small motors. I think the newer models got away from manual chokes to satisfy multi hull and sport fishermen owners who use these motors but need remote capabilities.

It's nice to know that my 1999 Honda 8hp is a classic! I should also note that we upgraded our motor mount to the double-spring version from Catalina Direct. I was OK with the original single-spring model but my wife had some difficulty pulling the motor up and she insists on being able to do everything on the boat in case I ever get injured or fall overboard - or she pushes me!!
