What's the correct procedure, in a crowded anchorage, when you're ready to raise your anchor and the boat off your bow is over your hook?

Good question

I have never experienced that situation but I am sure it could happen. I guess in a confined area all you can do is ask the person to pull his boat up to allow you to pull up anchor. I think people need to use common sense and not anchor where they will drift over someone's anchor, surely he could see the current, wind direction, tide etc. and simply allow for it. I think thats the answer to your question. Common sense.

Common sense?

Oh, c'mon now. Just politely ask them to carefully relocate. However, common courtesy could work. I wonder why someone who is on a boat is asking this question. Hope he's still not waiting for the answer on his wireless hifi hiwi laptop computerized autopilot GPS direction finder radar interfaced confluent navigation system. ;D Stu And being on his boat on top of the floating bottle from the anchor chain postings earlier this week. *yks

"Pulling Your Anchor"

"Dennis" You sound like a nice guy but some time in your sailing life you must face the chance to commit "Harbor Rage." Your options are: 1.) Let the anchor rote out as far as possible. Start the engine and motor up on the windward side of the other boat and have your wife empty the cold charcoal grill ashes by throwing them up high in the air as you pull along side of the blocker boat. If that doesn't get his attention, do the following. 2.) Have few drinks and about 11:00pm fire your flare gun down his companion way. That should get his attention and he'll remember next time to check his "swing ratio." With Fourth of July coming up, it should make for one Hell of a Display....

Option 3 Works

Like your Ideas. Option 3 send the first mate over in a dingy with a sharp knife to cut his rode. As he drifts by smile and say your anchor must be dragging. Wait tell he finds out its gone.

Politically Correct

I couldn't resist giving a pracitcal answer (although the other's were excellen't entertainment!). First contact the other boat & let them know they are over your rode & ask if they can temporarily take up on their rode to give you clearence to get your anchor up. They need to be made aware of the situation as it may prevent future occurances on their part. After pulling anchor (and seeing what they have out for scope), analyze the situation & see what YOU cold have done to avoid the situation (your fault or not). I experienced a similar situation once when I had two anchors out. My guess is that the offending boat didn't notice that I had two opposing anchors & wouldn't be swinging much...Most of the other boats only had one anchor out. Guess I could have put a round bouy out so that it looked like a permanent mooring bouy with little swing... Cause you can't control the masses, only your own actions. Related quote (I forget who): "you can't control the wind, but you can adjust your sails" Happy sailing (and anchoring)!
