I took a day of leave to get the boat ready for the first sail of the season. Here is a list of the things I managed to start and finish over my 3 day weekend, with a few pics:

1. Installed a new deep cycle AGM battery and charger. I opted for a Power-Sonic 35A. Has enough power for my needs (I did a power survey) and only weighs 25lbs. Put it in a new battery box and hooked it to a new on-board Genius Mini-1 4 amp charger. I had trouble deciding how I wanted to mount the charger, and I didn't want to screw it in, so I used 2 strips of outdoor dual lock 250. Great stuff and makes a very firm attachment that can still be removed if needed. Plus no holes to drill.

2. Over the winter I had new cabin cushions made in white. The old blue cushions were in bad shape, and many (including both berths) were missing. A guy around here who does upholstery for Monterey Boats made them out of white marine vinyl to give it an updated look. New foam for both berths. Very reasonable price and good workmanship - blue Sunbrella pillows next.

3. My wife made new curtains to replace the missing ones. $15.00 for the fabric (a 3 yard remnant of outdoor UV resistant fabric), plus thread, needles, and curtain holder tape from Sailrite, making the whole cost less than $50.00.

4. Cleaned and serviced both Lewmar 6 winches. I'm not sure this was ever done in the past. Basically looked like brown water in the winches. Proper marine lube on the gears, Rem oil on the pawls, new springs and they're good as new.

5. Replaced all bulbs (cabin and running/anchor lights) with LEDs from Marinebeam.

6. Refinished all exterior teak with 6 coats of Teakguard. The teak was in horrible shape, as shown by the pics. Also replaced the cup holders with new ones from this site. I like the Teakguard, let's see how it holds up.

7. Shortened my mast crutch.

8. Washed and waxed the entire boat with Meguiars Flagship Premium cleaner wax. Worked well, but had help with a DA polisher. Wouldn't want to do it by hand.

9. Misc: Greased wheel bearings, started kicker motor, tightened all loose hardware and adjusted shroud tension.

Overall I feel pretty good about all the work. But...I didn't get to sail.

Glad Somone is Making Time for the Boat

I spent the weekend grinding stumps, changing the oil and doing brakes on the car.

The boat is feeling neglected I am sure.

I am glad to see you taking care of your boat but the only thing I would have advised not doing is shortening the mast crutch unless absolutely necessary as it puts the mast at a lower setting causing it to be harder in the intial raising of the mast. However, you probably had a good reason for doing so.

Rick, stump grinding and brakes sounds like a lot of work. I got a pass on yard work for the weekend.

Dave, it was homemade mast crutch that I made far too tall. The spreaders were probably four feet of the deck when the mast was down. The thought was to make it easier to single hand the mast raising, but since I shoulder it up the first several feet, a lower crutch seemed a smart idea - helps keep me from knocking down branches, power lines, etc when trailering. Now the spreaders are about four inches off the deck. BTW, the view from the new home looks great, congrats.

One thing you can do is put a 4 X 4 across the bow, mark it where the bow rails are on both sides, cut out a 1 inch for the tails and then on top of that board cut another about two inches for the mast with carpet to sit on and it will lower the back end.

On the original 23.5 the mast crutch was collapsible by one pole inserted into the next size up that would take the smaller thus raiing it up higher to get the back of the mast higher and less effort and ouch on the shouder as well to get it started up. Food for thought. Thanks about the new house. Take care my friend.

I'm about to start similar boat projects this weekend as well. Looks great!
I'm pretty new with all this, but it was very easy with all the instructions on line, and tips on this site, post some pics when you're done.
