Weak Starter

I bought a 1988 Catalina 30 two years ago, and have difficulty starting the engine. It doesn't crank very strongly, and sounds like it is struggling to start. I have replaced both batteries and the starter, but still am experiencing the problem. I am wondering if it has something to do with the size or distance of the cables from the M25XP Universal Diesal to the batteries. Would appreciate any advice.

Starter

With new batteries and a new starter it is almost certain that the problem is in the positive cable connecting the battery to the starter and/or the ground cable running back to the negative terminal. Lots of attention is paid to the hot side but the ground cable carries just as much current. Since your boat is an '88 it is probably wise to replace the two cables now on general principles. Don't neglect to make good clean connections both to the battery and to the starter terminal and block.

Having same starting behavior

I have three batteries and I have the same problem. It almost always starts, but it always struggles and frequently does not start the first time. Theories anyone ??

Usually a simple fix...

I had the same problem even after charging and replacing batteries. The earlier comment/posts (see the archives) are right on. If your batteries are good and fully charged check ALL your connections between the batteries and the starter. Remove corrosion from posts and wire ends and tighten all fittings. I know, it's a pain and takes time but do it anyway. After that, if things still are not right, start replacing wiring. Electrical wiring on a boat corrode inside the insulation as well as at mid-run connectors such as butt connectors. Do this and I bet you will be back in business. Chris

Had exactly the same problem but my "4" batteries would respond the way you described. Simply took a lot of time and cleaned every cable contact. I purchased new batteries before I found the problem. Good luck!!
