Hello, I just bought a 1999 H170 and have ran into a problem, and apparently the previous owner had a similar problem. Forgive me for not knowing the terms, but the area where the rudder connects to the boat appears to be real weak. I had the boat out yesterday in maybe 15kt winds, and one of the screws that holds it in place ripped out. I would like to know if there's a way to strengthen that area as opposed to just going up in bolt size? Does any one have any thoughts on this? Manny m_salad@yahoo.com

rudder

hello 1 week ago i had the same problem I was sailing at 20 knts with my compagnon totally hanging out. Suddenly the attachment of the rudder break off. So compagnon in the water....on the motor to the port. I could get the spare part in 36 hours from the US to Europe, and so the holliday in France could go on. You are right: It's a weak part

possible option?

I'm thinking one option is to open an access hole in the mounting area and re-enforce it with through-bolts into a sheet of metal or something I can insert. I just don't know how that will affect the overall strength of the hull if I do that. Does anyone have any inputs on this?
