weak rudder mounting on H23

Hi, I've got an H23 and wanted to share this info with the group here: Check the mounting of the rudder on the inside of the transom. On my boat, there is no plate to spread the bolt load. As a result, the lower mounting bracket started to crush the reinforcing board laminated inside the transom. I would recommend rebedding the brackets and fabricating a decent size backing plate for each of the supports. I also have a couple of questions that someone may be able to answer: How thick should the sides of the hull be? I've installed a through hull on the upper portion of the aft hull and the thickness is ONLY 1/8"!!!! That seems awfully thin... Does anyone know what it is on their boat? I need to change the rubber hose connecting the cockpit drain to the bottom of the boat (where the centerboard lines go). Has anyone done that? Is it easy to do and what size hose is that? I assume there is no reason I can't get it from an auto supply place? Last question (that I can think off): Does anyone know if I can mount an inside hull transducer under the forward v-berth or is the hull cored at this point? (I believe its solid fiberglass) Does anyone know how thick the fiberglass is? Thanks a lot! Chris

H-23 rudder mounting, etc.

Your experience with the rudder mount is not unique- Note the posts of the last week or so regarding transom rot on the 23. This is the same issue. The hull on mine seems thin also - I can see light through certain areas in front by the vee berths! However, I have never had any problems at all due to hull thickness. A coulple of years ago, I replaced the plastic cockpit drain hose with a radiator hose (from an auto parts store) - it works well, and I've had no problems. It also seems nuch more robust than the original equipment plastic. My boat is a keel boat, though, so the cockpit drains out the transom.

Transducer Location

Don't know the thickness of the hull, but I did successfully mount an in hull transducer for a Horizon 40 under the V-berth of my 86 H23. The directions (which I followed) called for putting the transducer in a plastic bag full of water and holding over the intended mounting location to verify good readings before gluing. My installation has worked for three years with depths up to 120 ft. The only problem I have is the the unit occasionally looses the bottom in areas where it is extremely soft. (As a side note, the $500 Hummingbird 3-D with thru-hull transducer in my other boat has the same problem in the same areas.) Mark N, H23 BGood, Nimble Arctic Baby Grande, Solomons MD

Hull flexing

Jim, Does your hull side flex when you press on it pretty hard? (say in the port cockpit locker area) Say if you press with 50 lbs of force, how much will the side cave in? I don't have any evidence of this causing a problem either, but it freaks me out that the thickness seems to be only 1/8"....... Chris

With my 1985 25.5 I have experienced the same problems check my owners profile.

Transom / rudder question

I have a 1992 H23 that is shrink wrapped for the winter....how many of the transom mounting bolts are visible from the cockpit? Are there any others that are in the aft storage area or all all accessible from the cockpit? Also, I have some play in the rudder at the point where it attaches to the black fixture that is attached to the tiller. any ideas on how to lessen the play? thanks

Me Too

It's ironic that just today, I also noticed that the bolts on the bottom rudder bracket are pulling through my transom, and I am getting the same brown seepage everyone else is getting. I noticed all of this when I found the lower bracket to be loose and crawled inside to tighten it. I have already made arrangements to have two rectangular backing plates fabricated (one for the top and one for the bottom)--they should be ready for me tomorrow. I imagine that my rudder problame is exacerbated by the fact that a former owner has bolted the rudder into the down position with a second bolt--so instead of the rudder stressing the rope and/or kicking-up when it hits, it tries to rip the rudder off the transom. Obviously, this additional bolt will be removed. I've only owned this boat (an '86 H-23) a week, and have yet to get it in the water. I wonder what else I'll find...

Transom bolts?

Gary, What do you mean by "transom mounting bolts"? If you mean rudder, then all the bolts can only be accessed from the storage area under the cockpit. The top ones were a pain on my boat to get to.... There are four bots total, two per mounting bracket..... Chris

Thru Hull Depth Sounder

Chris, I have an '85 H23 with a keel. I mounted a thru hull in the lazerette behind the starboard berth and about 1 ft stbd of the centerline (which is behind and to the side of the keel). It seems to work fine.

Hose

Go to Agway or Lowes, they have all sizes, even Sears tool store. I have a 1987 23'and it had a lot of factory mistakes,Wiring the mast light, traveler stop's, Motor mount screws were crooked and leaked water in the transom.
