Weak Forward Thrust?

I've observed that a small amount of applied reverse throttle
produces a very healthy thrust in reverse. However, the same amout
of forward throttle doesn't seem to produce much of anything. I have
to give it a lot of forward throttle to get the boat moving. Is this
to be expected? Once I lean on the throttle, she gets up to speed
quick, but there doesn't seem to be much control between no thrust to
about half thrust.

So far, I've attempted to leave and enter my slip twice. Because of
the weak forward thrust at lower throttle, I can't get the boat to
turn sharp enough to get into the slip without entering, with what I
consider, too much speed. I have had to back in my slip. I find
that by throwing the boat in reverse, torque is generated to move the
aft end of the boat to the left. I am able to rotate the boat 90
degrees by toggling the throttle between a little reverse throttle,
then a big forward throttle to cancel reverse motion. Then I'm able
to back it in.

Is this "normal" Vega behaviour? Or does my system need adjustment?

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris

A common problem that is usually caused by misalignment of the combi. It
may be time to strip and renovate the combi system (£38 for complete
kit). This is not as difficult as people think and once you have done it
the first time you will realize its not too bad.. Complete
instructions and diagrams come with the refurb kit.

Kind Regards

I assume this requires a haulout? Since, I just got back in the water, guess I'll live with it for now. Next summer's project will be combi to prop. servicing. So that would be
1) Combi Servicing (Combi Kit)
2) Repack stuffing box
3) Replace Black Hose
4) Replace Cutlass Bearing (I was told it was worn by yard mechanic)
5) Grease Prop. Unit
6) Polish Shaft

Anything else?
Does the prop unit need servicing other than grease? Do you have a kit for that?
Do you sell cutlass bearing replacements?

Hi Chris

The only other thing that may need changing is the control tube but only
if worn as they are not cheap (£105). Cutlass bearings are made from
Nyoil (Oil impregnated nylon) £12.50. Use waterproof grease (Shell
Alvina is best). Use same grease on combi and prop boss. Fill prop boss
fully but only fill combi between half and a third full to stop
hydraulicking. Black hose is easy to change and cheap, costs about £10

Kind Regards

Steve:

If you please, a few words of description on the Combi renovation you
mentioned.

Thanks,
