We made it to Mexico

We just completed a 2,000 mile trip from Albuquerque, NM to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico towing a MacGregor 26M with a Jeep Cherokee Sport,2000 6 cylinder We averaged 55 - 60 mph all the way until Tepic,(2 hrs from PV) where we encountered mountains and that was tough, had to stop on one hill to cool down but we made it. We passed the border at Nogales to avoid the Durango mountains of Mexico. 4 day trip, we stopped in RV parks and slept and cooked on the boat, lota of fun for 2 60 yr olds, first time Macgregor owner

Good job, sounds like you know your way when crossing the border, language, customs etc.We are heading towards Brownsville, actually Port Isabel, Tx hauling rhe 26X. for a three month stay in an RV campground. Last year when in the same place we wondered about either driving across the border or sailing down into Mexico, but kinda' chickened out, what with drug running nightmare stories an' all.What has your experience been in that regard?BTW The Admiral and I are both 60+ also.Thanks, Ron

Are you leaving your boat there in PV?

After that long drive I wondered if you left your boat in PV and if so where are you leaving it? Did you get a chance to sail down there? I agree more info!!!Lori

I do not believe there would be any reson to take boat into Mexico, Port Isabel is a fine place to sail and hang out. If you are interested in going to Mexico I would recommend Progresso close to McAllen and you can shop until you drop. You do not even need to take your vehicle across since the shops start just on the other side of the river. There you will find everything that any other border town has.good luck scott

Sea of Cortez is GREAT sailing!

Mexico today is not like it was 15 years ago. The government is REALLY trying to promote boating tourism. I just took my M down to San Felipe from Mexicali. Facilities there are still not great but they are being improved for recreational boaters. All the launch ramps are weak - - - the one in the marina south of town is best. You have to be VERY, VERY careful of the 21' tides there (the third largest fluctuations in the world) - - - but if you stay offshore the water is GORGEOUS and the sailing fabulous. They are building a toll road from Mexicali to San Felipe in 2007 and when they finish it San Felipe will become the next Baja BOOM AREA! I highly recommend this area to more experienced sailors.Rick
