We just started another K-40...

We just started work on this Kettenburg K-40. It's a quick and dirty structural job. Fifty one ribs, transom, aft deck, cockpit walls, cockpit sole, cockpit benches and belowdecks bulkheads. Seams and paint. As you can see, she's rough as a cob.

And I thought I had a project boat.... The first boat I ever sailed on that belonged to my grandfather was a K-38... Early sixties. Have fun!!!!

Here's the progress on K-40 #35 as of Saturday.

The wood is starting to show as we strip her down.

The transom is about ready to come out. Lot's of hidden screws buried in there, both under the ply and under resin that somebody slopped on. That slopped on resin caused the rot of three plank ends that I'll have to replace.

We pulled the aft deck, only to find that the rot caused by the piss-poor propane locker install, creeped past the line we cut at.

Now we have to pull the cockpit coamings and move the cut further forward. The rot also extended into some ribs. Charles also found rot in the sheer clamp so we'll have to scarph in a new end section.

I'll do another posting tonight to show the speed of the project.

What the heck is it about transoms and rot? I replaced the transom on my wooden boat, and remember when there were a lot of them and it would be way-too-common to see them in a yard having their transoms reworked. Is it because of the oft-non-vented transom locker(s)? I assume this is Arness' former boat.

No, this isn't Seasmoke. It's the other one we started on Monday. This transom issue was caused by piss-poor yard work by somebody in Cali. Probably the same idjit that put in sisters made with cross-grain cut plywood laminates. Likely too, the one that built the propane locker hatch with no water lip. Whomever it was used goop to seal the ends of the planks and some bad spots in the transom ply. All the moron did was seal in the rot and doom the parts.
