I used to do a sneaky little trick with people having no steering experience at the helm.
I would spend 5 minutes showing them how to hold a steady course by the compass.
After they felt comfortable, I would check the weather on my handheld VHF. After a few minutes I would without them noticing, put my VHF in the cup holder close to the compass.
Of course it did a 30° swing & they would turn the wheel accordingly. I would then jump up & shout they were off course,remove the VHF with one hand & watch them see they were 30°from the course to steer. I would corrected course & would put them back on the wheel & 10 minutes later I would repeat my little trick again , until they caught on. It was a comical scene.
I would shout, "PUNKED"! I used to get alot of laughs.
