I've been using Turtle Wax for about three years on my boat. Its developed some blemishes that appear to be between the gel coat and the outside surface. I tried a bit of lacquer thinner last night and it took them and the wax right off. Is there any risk in using lacquer thinner on gel coat? Thx.

Ammonia
... or any other strongly 'caustic' detergent - eg. TSP TriSodiumPhosphate, any Sodium Silicate based detergent, "lye soap", etc.

Island Girl Pink is also another option to remove wax. If you use it in a fairly strong or un-diluted form it is also a wax remover.

Personally I would use the cheap option (ammonia). Mix ammonia with some detergent (like tide) and go for it. Rinse well and you should be done.

If you look at most wax stripers they are basically ammonia, but cost 4-5 times as much.
