We have kust purchased a used Catalina 22 that has never been painted on the bottom. It will be used in fresh water, Lake Champlain. We do have zebra mussels here that attach to the bottom. I want to avoid painting the bottom if possible. We are waxing the bottom, wax with ground up jalepeno peppers in it. Might this work, or are we crazy? If not what is the best way to apply the wax?

Previous owner used to do this...

Hello, We bought a Hunter 28 last spring that had been kept in Lake Champlain since she was purchased new in 1993. She had no bottom paint when we bought her because the previous owner had waxed her every year instead. Unfortunately, I don't know what kind of wax he used. We do know that he was a diver, so he would go under her several times a summer and do a bit of scrubbing to keep the bulk of the zebra mussles away. When we bought her, she had been pressure washed after she was hauled and there were very few zebra mussles on the hull. It seemed to work well for him so with a liberal application of wax and a few scrubs a summer, this approach seems to work. We decided to have barrier coat and VC 17 applied by Wilsboro Bay marina and this has been great for us. The VC was easy to touch up this spring, and the hull stays very clean. If you have any other questions, drop us a line. We're listed in the HOW owners listing. Enjoy Lake Champlain, we love it, Canadice Stein H28 "Great Blue"
