Could be a couple of things

I haven't followed the thread, but waxing the mast is like waxing any other part of the boat. I clean and wax the mast every season as part of my spring preparations for launch here on Lake Erie. It could also refer to waxing the mainsail track so that the mainsail guides move freely up and down the mast. I spray the mainsail track on my 272 with Sailkote before stepping it in the spring. Some other sailors have developed some creative ways to lube the track while the mast is standing. Check the archives or wait for one of those folks to reply. Tom

Waxing

Waxing the mast refers to waxing the mainsail track to provide for smooth movement of the slugs. I've heard of people carving a piece of a candle into the shape of the track and inserting it above the top slug to wax the track each time the main is raised or lowered. Personally, I don't do this as I have visions of melted wax all over my main, but I have heard of it being done.

Mast waxing

Tina, Aluminum masts are anodized to protect them from corrosion. A waxing, just a Tom described, helps protect the anodizing and is a good thing to do. Waxing or lubing the sail track in the mast is also good. This helps the sail slugs slide. This can be done with wax or special coating that are sprays of pastes. Be careful not to use a petrol based produce. it will get on the sail and turn black. r.w.landau

Tom

Tom, I have had a good summer. Got the boat in late due to no mooring. My wife likes this boat and spent 4 straight weekends on it with me. This was a plus. I left for Marathon on the 23rd.My dad, uncle, two brothers, and a friend rented a 43 Beneteau to sail to the Dry Tortugas. When we got there the charter outfit changed the boat to a 45 DuFour. I think it was a step down from the Beneteau. Anyway, we sailed, fished, partied in Key West and got to and from the Dry Tortugas with success in all of the above catagories. Sorry to hear about your ankle. I read your note the day I left but was pressed for time and could not respond. It is HOT HOT and HUMID here also, with very little wind. Glad to hear your sailing! talk to you latter, r.w.landau
