Ive been looking at a 27' Watkins thats for sale here in S. Florida but have no experience with this type. Are there any present or former Watkins 27 owners that can give me any insight as to what problems to look for? How do the hulls hold up to blistering?? Are there any deck lamination problem spots? etc.... Thanks, The Menace

I owned one befor my C36 MKII it was a 1980

Pretty sturdy little boat -- kind of like a poor mans Island Packet 27 . (very similar hull and layout (also built very near Island Packet plant in Fl) Not luxurious, (No teak and Holly floors) but they put the money in a sturdy boat not glitzy. Spars and rigging were very oversized and it had LOTS of room for a 27 foot boat, but does not point as high as a fin keel (like a Cat 27), but only a 3'11" shoal keel draft which I always liked. It had a modified full keel/(More like a scheel keel). I only had 2 cosmetic blisters on my boat (at the aft starboard on the keel) that were nothing to worry about and the rudder had (from what I could tell) cosmetic cracks in the gelcoat -- it seemed ok no rust dripping out. The decks were pretty solid -- I cut through a few spots to put in Solar Vent and it was pretty damn thick ! There were a few "creaks" on the deck, but when the buyers surveyor looked at the boat he found no problems nor water in hull. Obviously get a decent surveyor. I think the area that I could have fixed better was the jib track , I had fresh water leaks there where the through bolts held down the track----should have oversized the holes -- epoxied them over and re-drilled. Look for the bigger engine whether repowered or the 15 HP Yanmar (I had the venerable 2QM15). I could punch through almost **any** sea and make headway with that engine. I think some were powered with a 8hp which I would call undersized. All in all, a tough little boat that you could probably buy for a good price (~$10k) that has an inboard deisel, wheel steering & a lot of room for 27 feet. It will not win races but you will feel comfortable in a blow. Want to read more on these boats and ask people that own them -- go here. Previous Watkins 27 Onwer Here

My previous boat was a 1979 Watkins 27 with an 8hp Yanmar. Great weekender boat and I even did a trip to West End, Bahamas a few years ago. The only thing I found on my boat was that the foredeck had delaminated from the interior fiberglass liner. The deck wasn't soft, but springy...never did bother me, but the surveyor mentioned it in his report to the guy that bought it from me. I see you're in South Florida...just wondering if the Watkins you're looking at might be my old boat...L'Attitudes. Just like the previous post...it doesn't point up as well as a Catalina 27, but the room down below is a cavern compared to any other 27 footer you'll find. It's built tuff and made for the open ocean. Here's a webpage that's still published on the boat I owned.

Maybe!

I went to look at the boat yesterday...and it too had delamination on the foredeck and the cabin roof as well around the mast step. Someone had repaired the delamination with the old drill lots of 1/4" holes and inject epoxy. The headliner in the forepeak had been stiffened with some aluminum angle materials. The boats name was "Risky Business". The mast is a light blue color. The original Yanmar had been changed out to a bigger Perkins diesel. The boat was moored in Riviera Beach...just south of Phil Foster Park. The guy selling it was really nice and we had a long talk about the boat and a few hundred other things but I think Im going to pass on this one....its a bit too rough.
