Although I am aware of the basics of modern watermakers, I am at a loss to understand why watermakers are so expensive. Is there a critical component or material that is in short supply? The $2,000 to $5,000 is simply beyond the reach of most prospective cruisers. Yet, for smaller vessels with limited tankage and storage, a small watermaker could be just the ticket for breaking free of one of the last real cruising concerns. Any thoughts on this? Do you ever plan to offer a small and perhaps less cutting edge for unit for the rest of us? Has anyone considered rental program? s/v Parrot Tales, Beneteau 321

Cruising Water maker

I thought the same thing when outfitting our boat to go cruising. I did my reserach and picked a 6 gal/hr model that runs off DC. In the Cheaspeake Bay water was cheapand easy. In the Caribbean some islands water is non existant and others it is very expensive. This limits your stay in the out islands if your tanks are small. When we refit I would like to increase the size of the watermaker. Living on low water can be done, but more is a lot more comfortable. Especially for my other half. The watermaker is one item that went from nice to a must have on our list and many others we have met.
