OK I hope I'm not embarrassing myself with this question but how do you determine where the waterline is from inside the boat? If you put a clear hose on one of the thru hulls and hold it vertical will the water stop at the water line or will pressure cause it to go higher?

It should go to the same height as the water line on the exterior of the boat. Consider a swing-keel boat where the keel cable goes through an open thru hull where a tube is connected to raise the top of the opening above the waterline. Inside the keel cable tube, the water level is the same as on the outside of the boat.

You've got it. If it didn't, there wouldn't be any boats and we wouldn't be having this discussion. There probably wouldn't be any earth either, and least not remotely as we know it.

(Be sure that sea cock is working freely.)

Look hard at the pipe on the galley sink. If it is transparent you should see the water level. Get a crayon and mark the level on nearest piece of woodwork.
If your tube or the one on the toilet inlet is not transparent then disconnect it at the basin, or toilet, and slowly lower the open end until water appears. Then you have the level.
Of course the through hull needs to be open!

I've not tried this yet, but someone told me a stud finder held against the hull would see the change in density between air and water, showing the waterline.

The same priciple is used on a water level. You can hook a clear hose up to a through hull and move the hose all over the boat to see exactly where the water line all over the boat not just above the through hull. Just be sureto keep the open end of the hose above the water line. If you hook one up you'll see what I mean. I guess a garden hose with a short clear piece would work as well.

what are you doing that you want to determine this?

Well that's a pretty scientific solution with the water hose and all... but I just dropped a tape measure from the hull/deck joint (rub rail) to the water while standing on the dock next to the boat. I transferred this measurement to the inside and put a small mark on the compression post.... you see if you move around inside a small boat it will list as the ballast shifts. Anyway, I used the water line measurement when installing anti siphoning devices.... vented loops for the MSD and a bilge discharge hose.

And with a water level you can see how the water level changes. I know that's not necessary for what any of us is going to do on a sailboat. Just demonstrating the principle at work.

I just wanted to see what areas where available to mount anti siphone loops that wouldn't show.
