When water collects in the compartment under the engine where does it drain? Clean the engine some but the water does not drain anywhere? Me, I don't understand why? No way to pump it out either. Seems only way is to sponge it out. Any help is appreciated. John Buchman 74354.770@compuserve.com

H33 engine catch basin

The pan under the engine doesn't drain any where to keep oil out of the bilge and prevent accidental discharge of any spilled or leaking oil. Water shouldn't be there either. check all your water hoses, and water pump. Also check the mixing elbow. On my H33 with a 2gm engine a persistent show of water in this pan was dried up by fixing a pin hole leak in the underside of the mixing elbow.

Water in Engine pan.

Could be from the stuffing box. On my Hunter the box goes all the way under and behind the stuffing box but has a cutout. This cutout gives the shaft and stuffing box the clearance it needs and the hole for the drips to enter the bilge. But at certain angles, like motoring into big swells the drips will miss the cutout and hit the pan. Then, of course, it stays in the pan. Also, on my H37C, there is an illegal weep hole. You have to stick your head in and look near the top on the forward edge. Don't know whether Hunter or a previous owner added this.

Pan

My 33 has a pan that stops just about the aft end of the trans. There is a narrow slot formed between the hull and the pan which allowed the water from the stuffing box and rudder packing nut to run forward to the bilge without picking up oil drippings. When I first got my boat I found that slot filled with debris like leaves and dirt. When I cleaned it out I no longer got water in the engine drip pan.

pan geometry

The engine pan geometry on the H33 is such that water or oil drippings from the immediate engine area will collect in this pan. As it continues to collect, it will back up the sloped pan, flow over the lip under the transmission and through the slot Sam Lust described under the engine to the bilge if the slot itself is not stopped up. With the slot open, water entering the boat anywhere aft of the transmission will not show up in the drain pan.
