Water Tank

I've just bought V1394 'Alouette' and am in process of refitting. The
opening to the fresh water tank on bow is ceased. I've tried WD40,
even hammer and chisel but cannot open it. I don't want to use too
much force in case I do some damage. Is there a special tool or method?
Advise would be appreciated.

Hi Don,
there is a slot in the cover to tank that you are presumably using a
tool to twist.

The covers to water and fuel pipes can be hard to open after a few months.

I found that if I used a vice grip (adjustable wrench) to grip a piece of
metal the right shape & size to occupy the slot I could get enough torque
to rotate the cover anti-clockwise to open...

I put a torch to mine, with great care, and with a big screwdriver turned with a wrench that did the job.Nicholas Walsh

Dear Nicholas
Many thanks for your advice. I confess I'd never thought of putting a
blow torch to it.
I'll try it.

I'd start with lots of boiling water and patience.
If that fails I would then remove the fitting from the deck and deal
with it separately.

I've heard soaking things in vinegar can un seize things.
Not sure how you would do that logistically though.

Not sure if the vinegar would work, but its ingress wouldn't mess up your water tank like diesel or WD40 certainly would. Logistically though its easy enough: - form a dam on deck around the cap using plastecine and fill it with vinegar. IMHO no boat should be without its lump of plasticine (any colour will do) it has a multitude of uses.

Brion Toss Rigging got me onto some stuff called “KROIL” penetrating oil. This stuff is amazing and I have seen it loosen stainless bolts frozen into aluminum masts and also loosen totally rusted bolts. I wouldn’t be without it. It is sold by Kanolabs. I don’t know if it would loosen your water fitting, but it is worth having on the boat anyway. By the way, I’d remove the plastic hose from the fitting before I got too far into it so stuff doesn’t go into the tank. Kano have some other interesting stuff too, but I’ve only tried Kroil.

I actually live in Kenya and my boat is at the coast so things don't
get frozen. Nevertheless heat might move it.
