Hi everyone

I have a 2007 B40. A leak recently started in my aft (starboard) water tank. The leak appears to be at the seam near the top of the tank in the "hole" that is built into the middle of the tank for the metal anchoring post (to keep the tank secured against the bottom of the hull). It seems to be a small hole/gap, but I cannot quite see exactly the shape. There was no specific activity the created the leak---it simply just started after 6 years. The inside of the this tank area is reachable by my hand through the tank access hole (by screwing out the large cover)

Any suggestions as to what type sealant or other repair material would work best on this type of tank? I do not know what type of plastic it is made from.

The water tank is probably made of polyethylene or polypropylene. It seems like nothing will adhere to it. If its a small enough hole you could try driving a plastic screw into it to stop the leak. Also since many automotive fuel tanks are plastic, perhaps an auto supply store would have a product which could be used as an external seal. If its fuel resistant, it would certainly be water resistant.

Non-structural leaks such as yours can be repaired with silicone which is safe for water tanks. More commonly used patches probably won't work there but regardless of what you use, be careful it is formulated for ABS, polypropylene and polyethylene. You can find such repair kits on the internet.

A good quality construction grade silicone should work. Force it through the hole and mold a preventer gob of silicone on both sides of the repair.

You could also use a rubber devise such as these pull-through plugs: http://www.mcmaster.com/#rubber-plugs/=oel5ut. It would mean drilling a larger hole to fit the stopper. Being on a seam might be a problem though.

Thanks for the info

I appreciate the prompt info and it will give me numerous alternatives to use when I try to fix it over the next couple months.

Rick
