we're new sailors and we purchased our first 27 foot Hunter last fall.. We winterized the water system per the previous owner's instructions. but when we tried to turn it on for the season the system doesn't work and we don't know where to start. hints and suggestions would be appreciated.:)

You probably drained the water tank when you winterized. Maybe put a little anti-freeze in there. I am guessing you have an air lock between the pump and the refilled tank. Mine does that but usually will prime if the tank is full.

To solve that problem I have to get the air out of the line between the tank and the pump. On my boat there is a place to disconnect the hose in front of the pump. I fill the hose leading to the pump and simply blow into it. Do that a couple of times, reconnect, and the pump is primed.

Another thing that can happen is a loose connection. I have had to isolate plumbing problems by limiting connections. I can block off the hot water for example. Or start with just the galley sink eliminating everything else including the hot water tank. But I am betting it is just a prime problem. Make sure the tank is full and the vent is clear.

P.S. In all this I assumed that you know the pump is running.

Start with the simple stuff

Are the tanks completely full?
Is the pump running and just not pumping?
Try opening all the faucets and turning on the pump then, grab our shorts, suck on the faucet.

If all that fails take the pump apart and clean the one way valves. I have to do this every other year as the gunk builds up on the valves to the point where they don't work. After a cleaning they work fine.

Remove any screens from the faucets before turning them on. It is amazing what gets caught on them.

good advice that we should fill the tank.. thank you... but ummm.. how do we make the pump run? it always ran automatically when we turned on the faucet... now.. nothing...no water... no pump sounds

Go to the electric panel and make sure the breaker is turned on. It should be marked .
