I was emptying my fresh water tank so that I could add some new water and a bit of Aquabon to avoid future oder with my cold water. Upon refilling it, I recognized that the tank indicator stopped working. I read up and found that the Water Sensor needs replacing because they get "gucked" up. Is there a way to clean the water sensor? Any advice or experiences in this area appreciated.

WASTE tank sensors get gunked up, but I've never heard that water tank sensors do

'Cuz it's the animal fats in waste that clog internal senders. There isn't anything in water that can can clog one. So I suspect the sender has failed...a short, maybe? Loose connections? What make/model?

I have yet to remove it. I believe it is the original unit that was in the 99 Hunter 310. If I remove it, is this specially sealed? It appears to have some sort of sealer around it. We are going to check on the electrical. The entire time it was emptying it was displaying the progress on the meter.
When we went to fill it back up, this is when we got no response from the tank indicator.

Brand name should be on the panel, Dawn. If not, call or email Hunter and ask them. Or maybe someone here knows. Before removing the sender, I think we prob'ly ought to find out who made the system. That'll help us trouble-shoot it.

Btw...recommissioning the system every spring is the best way to keep your fresh water smelling and tasting good. I've posted the directions a zillion times, so if you do a search for fresh water maintenance in the archives you should find 'em.

It is probably a WEMA unit - look for the name on the display gauge. If so, the sensor is essentially a string of resisters and the wires have likely corroded. Call wema about a replacement - the replacement is much better quality - about $45. You will need to give wema the info taped onto the wire coming off the sensor, about an inch from the head of the sensor.

Yes, it is a WEMA unit. I am one step closer to solving this problem... I will keep you posted on my follow up and will make the call soon for a replacement. Thank you everyone.

you may have a two part unit with a 5 screw plastic flange bedded in caulk and the sensor screws into that. If so, you may be able to reuse the flange. Count the number of turns to get the old unit out and then screw in the new unit no more than that. The new unit is steel and if you screw it in too much you can destroy the soft flange. you should use white sealing tape on the steel.

Well, we went sailing this weekend, turned on the power to the gauges, and low and behold our water sensor was working and reporting back to the gauge. Checked it several times and it appears to have corrected itself?

Well, the tank indicators are back to not working again> Looks like I have more to add to my list of to-do's.
