I was sailing on a hot humid day and we recieved the usual downpour for this time of the year on sebago lake. the main hatch was closed and in the terencial downpour water was running in to the cabin on the starboard side of the main hatch. i was not to happy. however now i know why their is water on the salon floor when i get on the boat on my days off. has anybody had this problem and most important how have you rid yourself of this. i have sense bunge corded a 5x7 tarp over the main hatch.it works but is not to pretty especialy on a brand new boat. my freind has an oday and he thinks its pretty funny. thanks.

Sunbrella Cover

Mike: I have a new 240 with the same issue - main sliding hatch leaks in a downpour. I bought a hatch/slider cover from the chandlery which solved the problem. Looks like it belongs there, too - I haven't got heckled for it at the marina. Hope that helps. Drew

Hatch Cover

I did the same as Drew on my H260. It was easy to install and keeps the elements out. Looks great & is fairly inexpensive as for as boat projects go. Good Luck.

Ditto to cover

Mike, I had a hatch/companionway cover made out of Sunbrella with an added feature. I had the upholstery guy add a "D" ring directly over the middle of the sliding hatch. I had him make me a strap with clips on both ends of it. One clip connects to the D ring and the other clips on to the boomvang on the boom. This helps prevent water from puddling on the sliding hatch. It serves another purpose too. It wil protect your companionway boards from the sun and this will require less varnishing as well as the keeping the push rail on the top of the sliding hatch looking good. Look around your marina and you will see a number of boats with them. Have the local guy that makes it do the installation. It doesn't cost that much extra and saves you the headache of installing the snaps. Ask your friend if he has enough room for him and his significant other to sleep together in the aft berth of their Catalina 22! I think not!*5

The front part of the Hatch

has a tapered piece of wood to act as a dam. This is fastened with screws, which over time loosen and strip out. Some of us have through-bolted this piece with a good amount of silicon to seal it.

Caulk

I agree with caulking the wood and adding a cover. I had a loop attached to the boom to tent the cover, but found adding a swim noodle in the middle lengthwise worked much better.
