Water Pump

We have an intermittent problem with our water pump on our 89 Hunter 30. Occasionally, the pump doesn't want to shut off after the water spigots are closed. Normally the pump runs until it reaches pressure and then shuts off until the water is run again. I don't have any leaks that I know off. Is the pressure switch integral to the pump? I am assuming this is the case and that is the source of the problem. Thanks, Mike Dumont

Rebuild kit.

Mike: Sounds like you need a rebuild kit for your pump. Contact the mfg and see what they charge (usually cheaper than the kit cost). You mail them your pump, they check it out and repair if it is worth repairing. You pay freight both ways, but if the pump is ready to go you end up money ahead. Replacement pumps are in the $70-120 range. Repairs usually run under $30 and I think the kits are about $20 /-. Also think about a accumulator tank. Seems to help the cycling. Sometimes these leaks are impossible to find. If they still cycle with a new pump, there is a leak. The newer pumps are much quiter too.

Thanks Steve

I like the idea of an accumulator tank; that would save a lot of cycling. Also, a new quieter pump would be nice; the present one is quite noisy. Mike

Here is what I did!

Mike: Several years ago I went thru the same problem. I went out and bought a new pump, and sent the old one back for service. They rebuilt it and returned it ($30 or so). I then saved it for the day that the newer one would go south. It did, so I put on the rebuilt one and we were ready to go. I sent the one that gave up the ghost back for a rebuild and they told me she was shot. Next time I'll have to get another new one. I is nice to have a spare ready and if it is rebuildable you only have a few bucks wrapped up in your spare. We use our boat nearly every weekend, so it really does get a workout.

Same thing with alternator

I just did the same thing with my high output alternator. I had the failed one rebuilt and also bought a new one. Now I have a spare that can really bail me out in the future.

Water level?

If your water level in the tank is low, this can cause the pump to continue to run a bit longer, also.

Accumulator

Mike, Regarding Steve's comment about an accumulator tank (if you're interestd) somewhere in one of these forums is a posting about someone who built one out of large (5 or 6 inch) diameter PVC. Sounded pretty good. Regards Jerry

Yes I did!

Make the accumulator tank out of 6" PCV pipe and caps. Four nice features: 1- It can be made to fit in any otherwise unusable space. 2- It reduces the cycling of the pump considerably. 3- It won't split at the seams like the store bought kind. 4- Costs next to nothing to make, unlike the store bought kind!
