Water Pump Won't Stop Running

I recently emptied my water tanks for the winter by turning on the faucets in the galley and running it until the tanks were dry. Now I notice that whenever the water pump switch is on the pump runs continuously even though there is no water in the tanks. Why does this happen? Thanks

That is what is suppose to happen.

Joe: That is what is suppose to happen. You are pumping air. When the pump cannot build up any pressure (and it cannot build up AIR pressure) it will continue to run. This is the same thing that happens when you tank is empty.

Lack of Pressure

Most water pumps turn on when pressure in the system drops below a predetermined threshold. If there is no water in your tank, there's not likely to be any water pressure and the pump will turn on attempting to re-establish the pressure. I guess it should be said that running the pump without water in the system is probably not going to do it any good. Gary Wyngarden S/V Shibumi H335

The pump keeps running because it's sucking air

It's trying to prime, but can't. It's only when it does prime and establishes pressure in the system that the pressure valve tells it to shut off. Leave the pump breaker off until you fill the tank again next spring.

Air Lock

Joe, I helped another owner who had run his tank dry and the pump would not prime again due to an air lock. We were only able to get the flow going again by SUCKING on the galley faucet whilst the pump was running. Getting my mouth in the right position was awkward but it was the only thing. Blowing was no use due to the non return valve in the system. If yours does not start up immediately you fill your tank I suggest you remember this tip. Regards, Don.

Thanks Again

I thought the lack of water in the system was creating a pressure problem but wasn't sure. So to the experts I go. Thanks to everyone (once again). Don, I'll remember that tip!! Joe Mullee
