I have a 1988 Catalina 28.
Engine is Universal M3-20.
My mechanic pulled the coolant water pump due to a leak but the replacement water pump is "thicker", that is the internal portion is too deep to go into the hole in the engine block. The bolt pattern and hose DO line up.
The part distributor says it is the correct part.
Please take a look at attached pictures.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated?

hello

yep, there is a difference in height of the inserted part ... sometimes mechanics use a spacer ring with cork gasket... this is a process used on diesel motors in Semi Trucks....

sincerely

Either the impellor in the new pump is "longer" or has not been pressed onto the shaft far enough. Measure and compare impellors, if equal, check the space between the impellor and the pump housing. Be interesting if the distributor has another new one to compare, just in case this one was the right part number but wrong impellor installed or off spec.

Here is another (fuzzy) picture that shows that the impeller itself is thicker. Also, the parts distributor has also ordered another pump for comparison. Hopefully that one will be thinner.

Have you personally checked the parts #s on www.marinedieseldirect.com? It sure looks like a similar but not the same pump. You might need to do some more homework, instead of dealing with the "my mechanic" and "they said..."

Good luck.

Stu - YOU DA MAN!! The website (www.marinedieseldirect.com) worked great. When I put in the original part number the website indicated "Be careful...there are 2 versions of water pump...a thick one and a thinner one". Exactly what my problem was all about. Proper water pump is on order. Thanks a million..Ken
