Water Pressure Problem

My hot water pressure on my Hunter 41 DS has decreased over the last 3 weeks. It's down to a bare trickle! The cold water pressure is great and the water pump is working fine. Any suggestions as to what may be causing the problem? Thanks.

Hot Water Heater

Nothing comes to mind. I'm not aware of any screens or filters in front of or behind the water feeds on the hot water tank on our P42. If it were my boat I would start with the inlet side to see whether it receives a strong feed. If good there then the outlet side. It could just be a calcified clog on either end.

Our model has screens on the fresh water tank side of the pump to protect the impeller, but nothing on the hot water tank side. Maybe your model has something like that that has become clogged with debris.

Another possibility is if there is a shut off valve on the inlet side of the hot water tank. The plastic shut off valve on our forward tank becomes clogged with a calcified material that slows water flow to a trickle. I usually need to clean it each season after which normal water flow returns.

Re: Water pressure

Found the culprit. My Force 10 water heater has a Watts temp regulator attached to the hot water output. Removed at the output side and a small screen fell out along with what seemed to be boulder size gravel. Cleaned out the fitting and the screen and reassembled. Everything works perfectly now!

Driller B, thanks for the recent additional info.

Unfortunately, the clog wasn't in the screens in my Watts temperature regulator, but in the Kuuma water heater itself: only 14 months old, and it is already clogged with scale.

Not surprisingly, our dealer says Kuuma's warranty doesn't cover this. Kuuma's engineers suggested using vinegar to try and clear the tank, like you'd do with a coffee maker. Apparently, nothing stronger than vinegar is permitted.

We are all puzzled about the scaling. None of the other boats at our marina have had this problem, including several newer Hunters in the SailTime fleet, and we've only filled our water tank with water from the marina where our 2009 Hunter 38 was commissioned, and our home port marina.

We are planning on replacing the Kuuma with an Isotemp Slimline 20, and hoping we don't have a repeat of the scaling problem.
