water pooling on cockpit seat

I understand this is a common problem with these boats. I've been thinking about installing small scuppers in the corners. Has anyone else done this? I've tried to search through the archives but haven't been able to find a match and I know I've seen this addressed in the forums before. I'm getting tired of the little mud puddles.

Hey Tammy..

I have a 33 (1982) with a simular problem on the port side. The starboard side does not have this problem since the cockpit locker lid has drains. I did get rid of standing water at the toe rails by installing drains made from fiberglass tubes.. I did an article. If you check it out, the same idea probably would work for the cockpit seats drainage. Search "David Underwood" under projects. Good luck.

Hey David!

Thanks, I'll check the archives under your name. Funny thing about those toe rail drains. Our boat had them on both sides, near the winches, and we took them out and glassed in the openings. We found that more water ran past them than into them even after we made sure they weren't plugged. These drains have their own thru-hull to drain, they weren't tied into the main cockpit drains. Our boat has a channel on the port side that must have been intended to drain water off the seat.....but it doesn't work. If we install drains, I'm going to fill that channel in so that it looks like the other side.

I also got tired of the problem

I just drilled and installed a drain into my '79 Hunter 30' this season on the port side. Drains to just below the instrument pannel. One thing I found was the fiberglass was a lot thicker than I thought and I do not have much purchase on the drains. Keep this in mind if you pick-up your drill. Also use a hole saw and not a spade bit. Ian s/v Meant to Be

So you have it drain into cockpit ?

and not overboard? Do you or did you have drains near the toe rail like the ones that David installed on his boat? I'm wondering now if the ones we plugged were original or something installed by the previous owner.

I have only drilled one drain

Tammy I have only drilled one hole into the port side seat section at the stern bend. It drains from the seating area to just below the instrument cluster pannel. I have no problem with the water coming down the toe rail. The problem I had was water laying in the cockpit and on the seating area. Ian
