Water on Cabin Sole

When my '86 272 heels beyond fifteen degrees, a fair amount of water appears on the cabin sole (perhaps half a cup). The bilge is dry, as is the engine compartment, so I have no idea where it's coming from. The water is usually clear and salty, but occasionally it smells of oil. Any ideas?

Water from Engine Bilge

I have a O'Day 28 and water would collect under the engine and when you heel it would get out on the floor. My solution was to put a second bilge pump under the engine. Good Luck

Does it matter which way you're heeled?

C - Does the direction of th heel matter? If you heel once and the water appears, and you then clean it up, will it reappear if you heel again? If you want, I'd be happy to drive up from Portland to have a look with you. Give me a ring at 831-8338. I live in town so its no hassel. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

clogged drains ...

that are interconnected with what looks like 3/8 in holes ... I have had two problems rencently with the vee berth floor not draining and the anchor well plugged as well ... both unrelated but an indication that the drainage system may be tight. in the main cabin who knows how one plugged dain hole will interact. I used a long wire tire to clear one drain and a hose from the dock to clear the other.

Water on the cabin sole-some other ideas.

Check a couple of places where there may be hoses that are leaking. First, try the seacock for the raw water cooling system and see if it may have a small leak. That small bilge is partitioned off from the engine bilge and could retain some water if a hose leaks. Under the right conditions, it could dampen the sole. Also, check the bilge hoses which run under the starboard settee and the storage area under the galley stove. A leak there could pump out enough water to spill out and dampen the sole. Also, this is an outside shot, but take a look at the fastenings for the lower gudgeon. Two years ago while heading north through the Detroit River, I found water running out onto the cabin sole which had found its way from a loose lower gudgeon fitting, through the quarter berth sole and down onto the main cabin sole. I had to saw the bulkhead away which divides the quarter berth from the lazarette to get at the bolts to tighten them. Good luck Tom
