After pumping my PHII toilet dry, the water level in the bowl slowly rises again - usually accompanied by a "burp." Why can this be happening? The holding tank is below the toilet and the holding tank vent is clear. I have even opened the pump-out deck plate to be sure there was no back pressure.

is below the water line and you are leaving the handturn in the pump position. If you leave in the "Dry" position I don't think you will have a problem but then this is only from my experience with my PHII.

Is the water in the bowl, clean or dirty?
If it's clean, Ron's prob'ly right...it's coming in via the intake. If it's dirty, the air valve in the toilet may need cleaning or replacement...that's even more likely if you're also feeling any backpressure when you flush. If it IS intake water, both of you need to install a vented loop in the intake that's at least 8-12" above the waterline at any angle of heel. When the bowl is at or below the waterline, relying on remembering to turn the dry/flush knob to dry is the best way I know to sink the boat--especially if you also forget to close the intake seacock when you leave the boat. The loop has to go between the pump and the bowl, btw...NOT between the thru-hull and the pump.

It's dirty water
I apologize for the lateness of this reply, but have been away from the boat. The water that rises in the bowl is dirty. I removed and cleaned the air valve. It works fine (whistles)but the water still rises. But get this...if I set the diverter valve to pump directly overboard rather than into the holding tank (using clean water), it is slow and difficult but the water does NOT rise after pump out. Could it be a bad joker valve that works with the greater back pressure of direct overboard?
