So after my maiden voyage this weekend on my 22, I returned to the boat Monday after work to find the bilge filled with water. I was out in rough water so I dont know if it was from that or if I am slowly taking on water. Regardless I went and bought a pump and floater switch. Has anyone had any similar problems with water in a 22 or maybe some ideas where it came from?? Thanks. Dave

Has it been raining? Most the water I take on is from rain water - Having a DC bilge pump is a good Idea - I would also recommend a manual bilge pump -

I am pretty sure it didnt rain and I forgot to check it after a day out on rough water so I don't know. I installed a DC pump and there is a hand blige that uses a hose that you have to hold wherever you want it to pump. I hope i am not soaking up the lake.

Leaks
There always seem to be leaks around the windows, towrails & etc. However, in the 34 years I have had my "22" it has never filled the keel compartment. I suggest you check ALL your underwater fittings this would include any drains and also the lower rudder fitting. There may be a chance that you are getting some sort of "siphon" effect when you are heeling(?) with water coming in through the sink?

I re epoxied and caulked anything that had gaps and reembedded the rudder fittings. Please just be from rain and or being out in rough water. Its been one thing after another and I ve been out 3 times. The sink drain is actually what I hooked up the pump too. I never use it so I went under the bench and connected the bilge to it.

David After a year of head scratching I think I've finally stopped the mystery leak. Short of the aforementioned siphoning effect, I would look at any and all hardware that attaches with through bolts and/or screws. I pulled 85% of the deck hardware off and rebedded it all. Couldn't get to the bow pulpit and still need to address some cleats and winches. Was at the boat today after three consecutive days of downpours and found my bilge dry. It's amazing how quick and how much water can and will find it's way into the boat. Next time, start out with a dry bilge and check it when you return. Good way to eliminate the backflow as the culprit.

chased a ghost leak around our boat for a couple of weeks when first got it... was pretty frustrated untill it dawned on me the icebox drains into the bilge...

The O22 apparently is infamous for cracks that can/do develop at the point of the hull and keel junction judging from earlier owner comments in the forums. Last year I was taking on a small seepage of H20 into the bilge and decided to "fix" it by first removing a glob of sealant that had been placed there by the previous owner. It got worse. I did a quickee job of glass/resin which didn't withstand the rigors of trailering apparently. This time I'm grinding out the area more thoroughly, acetone wipe, which is now followed by epoxy resin reinforced with glass mat. We'll see... I'm keeping a tube of 5200 handy just in case. Point is, maybe that's your source of leakage as well (since you indicated topside leakage from rain doesn't seem to be a factor). Just one question - where the heck do you fit a bilge pump in a 22? Mine's a 1976 with a pretty flat bottom and practically non-existent bilge area. All I have are a couple of 2-3" access holes in the sole which can accomodate a MANUAL bilge pump (and large enough for a cell phone to drop into!!). Good luck.

My 22 leaks in rough water when sailing. not bad, but I found the the leak is from the tube that the line for the centerboard runs through.I fixed it with a rubber sleve. ok now.

The bilge pump seems to work well. As far as fitting the pump in the bilge of a 22, I have what looks like a partitioned bilge where the centerboard sits when it is retracted. I am pretty sure they are connected at the bow and stern sections of the bilge for even distribution, so I put the float switch in the higher part and the pump in the lower. Ran the bilge pipe under my cabinet and out the drain for the sink.
