As I continue my quest to repower my 1979 Hunter 30 with a new to me Yanmar I would like to say thanks for all the advice I have gotten. I have another question. What do I use as the outside screen for the raw water intake? I pull the boat here in a few weeks and I need to already have the part on hand because I know there is now way in #%&*# that I wlll be able to find that part I need in the area. I am sure that the screen/grate has to be missing or broken, when I pulled the water line on the old engine I noticed the water line was full of sand and one small seashell. I am begining to get the idea that the prior owner was not big on maintance.

Not meaning to bust the budget but you should replace it. If it is original then it is 1/2" and cannot accept a seacock. Even if you stay with your current valve(with a reducer) you will be ready for a seacock eventually. As Claude points out the "strainer" is part of the thru-hull.

Redrilling the hole to 3/4" is relatively simple with a good hole saw and a good pilot hole. Just glass in a plug that you make out of plywood using a 1/2" hole saw. The pilot hole is already there from making the plug.
