Can anyone tell me how fresh water gets into the swim platform? Is there any fix for it? The dealer says it’s a common problem. If I can’t find out where it’s leaking from I was thinking about a small bilge pump. I’m in the process of purchasing the boat('94) and trying to find out some of its quirks. Thanks!

have a GOOD survey

..as 94 was not a best year for the 29.5..Check it carefully in details. Some area of potential problem : engine mountings and vibration, leaking ports, cracks in gelcoat, steering system( under cockpit sheaves , Derelin bearing/sleaves-check rudder movement), mast support metal plate integrity ( it might crack due to alumunium S.S. -corrosion). No , I didn't encounter such fresh water leak in cockpit problem.. Good luck..but check it well first. If in good condition , you will enjoy it.

Water shouldn't be in there

I have a '95 29.5 and have never had water in there. There could be a bad seal on the swim seat locker covers. Check that with talcum powder and a hose. If it isn't that, the caulking on the rubrail at the sugarscoop stern of the boat may have deteriorated. If it isn't one of the above 2 reasons, the hull to deck joint at the sugarscoop stern may be leaking. If that's the case, it's time to see a good surveyor.

Just thought of one other thing

Check the hoses and connections to your cockpit shower if you have one. A slight leak here could add fresh water to that area.

This may sound dumb

Can you tell me what you mean by swim platform? If you are talking about the two stern lockers I have never had water in mine. Also is your boat if fresh or salt water (don't know much about NY) Russ Her Diamond Ring

Wow Joe, That must be one heck of a leak. We store scuba tanks down there and even after a few day of heavy diving I can get all the water out with a sponge and a few squeezes. Like Bob said, there should not be water in that locker. I just had the stern of our 29.5 pretty well torn down because I had to work on the steering so I am trying to picture any place that could leak. Unfortunately, our boat is 300 miles south of here in Mexico. As I remember, other than the hatch covers there are only a very few things that should be able to leak. I am ruling out hull etc because it is fresh water. There are the 8 bolts for the swim step, about that many more for the bimini, the diesel and holding tank fill/empty through hulls and the shore power receptacle. (Sorry if the terminology’s are not right) First thing I would try would by to dry the area really well. Next get some newspaper or some other paper that will show water really well. Line the inside with the paper and take a medium pressure hose to any area that looks like it could leak. Check for water spots every few minutes. By the way, one time we did have several gallons of fresh water in that locker. We were storing 2 gallon plastic water bottled down there. Some one went to get water, found the bottles empty and threw them away. Later I went to get something and found lots of water. After a little detective work (digging through the trash barrel) I found the bottles, they had split from the heat. Hope your water is as easily explained. Leaking Swim Platform

When we first took delivery, I had a hard time keeping those lockers dry. The dealer did something, and they have been real dry since then. Sure, a little splash water, some drippings from the bilge bucket and water cannon (pirates), etc. but nothing major. This may sound wild, but I've heard that blowing snow can get through seals that liquids (rain, etc) can not. Being that your boat is onthe hard, could snow have blown in and then melted? Dry that puppy out, put a small member of your family in there, and spray with a hose! Be sure and let us know the results.

My '94 29.5 leaks too, but...

I get a considerable amount of water back there too. But mine was originally caused by damage to the stern rub rail during a wind storm. The best way to test was while under power checking the lockers showed water seeping thru the seam from the rub rail area where the deck meets the hull. Another way it can and has leaked is thru the thru-bolts for the ladder. Check to see if they leak.
