Water in galley floor after hard rain

Whenever there's a moderately hard rain, the galley floor in my 1994 33.5 becomes covered in water. It doesn't appear to me that the water is coming from any of the hatches, and I can't see where else it might be coming from. A couple of years ago, I subscribed to the Hunter list, sponsored by Sailnet, and there were quite a few emails about other 33.5's with a similar problem, but, as I remember, not much of a conclusion about the cause. Does anyone have any ideas about where the water is coming in?

Cover up!

Jim: I think you will find that it is from the companionway hatch. We had the same problem with the hatch on our H'31. Water gets into the track that the hatch slides on and finds it way into the boat. Our first line of defense for this was a sunbrella cover for the companionway. This eliminated most of the water. Then we got a dodger and no longer have this problem.

Re: Water in Galley

Hello Jim, I own a 1990 33.5. I have had water standing on the galley floor, but it wasn't from rain. My shaft log was dripping and it finds it's way down along the outside of the fiberglass engine foundation and seeps thru the bulkheads under the icebox. I remedied the problem by, first tightening the shaft log and then damming up between the engine foundation and bulkhead to redirect any drip water between the foundations and ultimately into the bilge. I'm not sure if the later model 33.5 is identical, but you should check it out. Good Luck, Brent http://www.elenalua.homestead.com

Base of the mast?

We have a 285 and once in a while, when it rains really hard we'll have water drip out of the top of the mast support (inside the cabin) and leave a small amount of water on our table. This has only happend two or three times at the most an only when it rains a certian way. I'm thinking of getting a kit that seals off the space between the bottom of the mast and the deck. But it happens so little it's almost not a problem. Sounds like your's is worse. Well...thats my 2 cents worth of advice!

What is a shaft log?

I hope this doesn't show my ignorance, but what is a shaft log?

Companionway top

We have the same issue and it's from the companionway top (on the deck). This Spring I plan on rebuilding the entire section to be "more" water tight (and have the plexi window that is embedded in the top redone). The whole thing invites water into the cabin. We also have the pleasure of rain water through a few portlights and hatches. These are also on my list. I do remind myself, however, that boats are in and around water constantly and will NEVER be 100% dry. Is there anyplace in the US with a large lake, no snow, no rain, and constant temps over 60? I'd buy my tickets today.

shaft log

The shaft log is the assembly mounted in the hull which the propeller shaft passes thru to the outside. It has a set of adjusting nuts/gland nut containing a seal to prevent leakage. The traditional style is adjusted to drip a drop or two a minute when running which provides lubrication/cooling to the shaft where the seal is encircling it. Newer styles are drip-less and require different procedures of maintenance. It is important to know which type you have before adjusting...

Check the scupper connection

We had a similiar problem after rain. I checked shaft log, hatches, ports etc and found no evidence of leaking. I looked under the cockpit deck where the lines that connect the scupper to the overboard are located. I found one of the lines disconnected so the rainwater ended up in the bildge. Its worth a check.
