Water in engine oil

I have water in my universal diesel 5411 oil and oil in the bilge. I suspect the water muffler. How can I tell where the water is coming from? How can I check out the water muffler? Jerrygg@earthlink.net

I'm certainly not an expert...

...but that doesn't sound good. I suspect what has happened is one of the water cooling jackets has rusted through into the engine. That's the bad news. The good news is that you will enjoy having a brand new Universal diesel m25xpb. I'm just waiting for my engine to kick it so I can get one of those! Maybe the water came from overcranking the engine. The water muffler should have a drain plug at the bottom. That's useful for when you are cranking your engine and it won't start - drain the muffler so it won't back up into the engine. See if you have lots of water coming out. There ideally shouldn't be much water. Check the exhaust elbow too. It could be clogged up, which could cause water to back up into the engine. There are 4 bolts behind the manifold you take off, the hose that goes up to the vented loop (clean the vented loop too), and a hose clamp or two at the muffler. Take it out, clean it up. Change your oil now. Don't wait too long. An old engine will have some oil drips into the bilge. That's what mine does and I think mine's in fine condition. Good luck, I hope its just something minor. -Rob

Antisiphon

There is an antisiphon valve under the sink that keeps water from the muffler being sucked back into the engine when it cools. It can get clogged and then the vacuum created by the cooling engine will pull water back into the engine. This valve needs to be checked each year. I hope you pulled the injectors and drained the water/oil from the engine and put new oil in. If you crank the engine with water in the cylinder (the one closest to the exhaust) it could hydrolock as water cannot be compressed, bending a rod. Check the antisiphon valve, do NOT ever crank the engine a lot if it will not start as the water pump is pumping water in, but the engine (not firing) will not blow the water out the exhaust. If the engine will not start (applies to most marine engines) close the intake thru hull so no water is pumped in until it can be blown out with the exhaust. Once started, open the thru hull. The 5411 engine is a workhorse and as dependable as can be, just requires some maintenance. Good luck, let us know what you find out.

blown head gasket

I drained out the water, closed the intake valve and re-started the engine after about 20 minutes it began to leak around the head. Now I will ear it down. Thanks for the replies. jerrygg@earthlink.net

new 25xp

I just installed a new Universal and used the high rise elbow that Westerbeke supplies. This is different from the old configuration where the exhaust was dry until it entranced the muffler. Has anyone used this new high rise elbow used on the new 25xp Universal?
